5 Things you Need to Do as soon as you arrive in Melbourne

Congratulate yourself

There are no two ways about it, it’s a blooming long way!  You are probably feeling like you don’t know which way is up, let alone what time of day your body thinks it is.  You made the very brave decision to emigrate to Australia some time ago. It’s been a huge upheaval. You’ve made it.  Welcome to Melbourne.

Take a deep breath In

… and breathe out slowly.  Sounds obvious I know, but you will have been going through a fair old rollercoaster of emotions in the past few hours, days, weeks, months.  A move to the other side of the world really is life changing.  There will have been lots of excitement and lots of worries. It’s awesome, it’s amazing and it’s also overwhelming – go easy on yourself and remember to breathe.

Grab yourself a coffee

However you like it; long-black, flat-white, skinny de-caff cappuccino, soy latte, Melbourne makes the best coffee in the world and we drink lots of it, so you may as well start as you mean to go on.  There’s a café in the Arrivals building once you’ve collected your bags and walked through the magic doors.  Forget Costa, forget Starbucks, and (dare I even mention it) forget instant granules!  Your palate is about to be re-educated.

Go find your ride

You’re in Australia now, let’s get going.  For the moment there is no train service from Melbourne Airport but, there’s one in the planning.  It won’t be finished until 2029 so you’ll need to arrange something else if you want to get into our glorious city any time soon. If you’ve pre-booked a hire car, the pick-up point is on the ground floor carpark level of the Park Royal Hotel building.  You can’t miss it, it’s right there in front of you as you walk out of the main terminal.  There’s a taxi-rank just outside the terminal building or the Skybus will take you to various parts of the city for a very reasonable fare, with free wi-fi thrown in, so you can tell your friends and family that you’ve arrived in the Land Down Under.

Look out of the window

Don’t be surprised if you see kangaroos.  As you drive out of the airport Melbourne-bound, look to your left as there is an area of land that is often dotted with grazing kangaroos (yes they eat grass).  And if you keep your eyes peeled (trusting jet-lag hasn’t already attacked your eyelids), you will see the ever-changing skyline of our beautiful city.  Welcome to Melbourne! Welcome to Australia!

(Of course, the events of 2020 mean that air travel to Australia is currently very tricky.  This article looks forward to a time, in the not too distant future, when we will hopefully be all getting back to some kind of ‘normal’ and re-connecting once again, across the world.)
